History

Prior to its establishment as an independent association on April 1st 2007, the Association of Directors for Social Services Cymru was a branch of the Association of Directors for Social Services UK.

In 2005, following legislative changes in England, ADSS (UK) put forward proposals to split the UK association into three separate organisations. The political context in Wales had diverged significantly from that of England to the point that there was little common interest in retaining branch status. As such, the ADSS (UK) Executive Council agreed for the Cymru branch to re-structure as a new leadership association in its own right.

In May 2006, ADSS (UK) membership voted overwhelmingly for the reconfiguration of ADSS (UK), and financial support was approved to increase the capacity of the ADSS Cymru branch Support Officer to full time to manage the transition period.

On April 1st 2007 ADSS Cymru became an independent association, and is the leadership association for social services in Wales.
